How it works
A shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break produces 8 net hours. Decimal hours can be useful when completing a timesheet.
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift finishes the next day. It does not calculate overtime pay or payroll entitlements.
Frequently asked questions
Does it support overnight shifts?
Yes. A 22:00–06:00 shift counts as eight hours before breaks.
Does the tool calculate wages?
No. This tool measures hours only, not contractual pay rates or overtime rules.
Time worked, breaks and overnight shifts
A shift from 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break results in 8 net hours. An overnight shift from 22:00 to 06:30 lasts 8 hours 30 minutes before deducting breaks.
When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day. It does not model shifts longer than one day, overtime premiums or employment rules. For schedules, visit the business days calculator.
Add up multiple shifts, including overnight work
Select Multiple shifts to enter one shift per line, using the format 09:00-17:30;30 (start-end;unpaid break in minutes). The break is optional and defaults to zero. For example, 09:00-17:30;30 produces 8 hours; 22:00-06:30;30 also produces 8 hours. Combined, the two shifts total 16 hours. You may include up to 31 rows; the result shows hours and minutes plus decimal hours, without estimating overtime pay or local employment rules.
Dated timesheets: weekly totals, monthly totals and CSV
Choose Dated shifts and enter one line per shift in the format 2026-10-23 09:00-17:30;30, where the final number is an optional unpaid break in minutes. The tool totals shifts by start date, by calendar month and by Monday-start week. Overnight shifts are assigned to their start date and are not split at midnight. You can set a weekly hours threshold to view the hours above it; this is a mathematical comparison, not a determination of legally payable overtime. Export the displayed summary as a local CSV file.
